The On/Off switch allows the opening and closing of the electrical circuit.
When set to the On position, the water circulating in the piping is detected by the water heater and a signal is submitted to kickstart the ignition sequence.
The Off position permits cold water to run since the water circulating in the piping is not detected by the water heater.
